Cats As Pets

A lesson and worksheet on having cats as pets.

 

Objectives:

• Students will be able to state some of the traits and characteristics of cats, specifically of cats as pets.

• Students will be able to describe the relationship between cats and people.

• Students will use inference to describe cats in various ways.

 

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

Lesson Procedure:

Print the reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).

Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions. Teachers may also use the text as part of a classroom lesson plan.

In ancient times, most people thought that cats were very mysterious creatures, and some even believed these animals had special powers. In fact, in ancient Egypt, cats were worshipped as gods. These days, people have gotten to know cats more as pets and companions. If you are thinking of getting a pet, you may want to know more about cats and why they make good companions. If you already have a cat, you probably know what makes them the most popular pets in the world.

First of all, cats are very good at taking care of themselves. Of course, we have to feed them and give them a safe place to live, but if you watch a cat closely, you will see that he is very clean. One of the things most pet owners like so much about cats is that they do not need to be walked, and they can use a litter box on their own.
