A history reading comprehension lesson on the life of famous American pilot Amelia Earhart. The lesson outlines her childhood and flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Includes a printable teaching lesson worksheet.

AMELIA EARHART HISTORY LESSON

 

Directions:

Print the Amelia Earhart reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).

 

Students should read the story silently, then answer the questions about the story that follow.

 

Excerpt from passage

Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas in 1897. Her grandparents were prominent citizens in the town of Atchison, Kansas where Amelia was born. Amelia and her sister Muriel grew up with many advantages because of their grandparents' wealth.

In 1905, Amelia's father left his private practice as a lawyer and got an executive job in Iowa. It was there, at the Iowa State Fair, that 10-year-old Amelia Earhart she saw an airplane for the first time. As she later put it, the airplane was made of rusty wire and was not that interesting to her. However, ten years later, Amelia Earhart would become very interested in airplanes.
