IDENTIFYING GEOMETRIC SHAPES AND PARTS

Objectives:

1. The student will have a better understanding of shapes as a whole.

2.  The student will be able to recognize and name lines, segments, rays, angles, and other parts of shapes.

3.  The student will be able to identify the parts of a shape within the shape and how to label them with letters.

4. The student will understand how shapes differ and how they are alike.

GEOMETRIC SHAPES AND PARTS LESSON

Directions:

Print the Identifying Parts reading and questions worksheet (see below).

Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions.  Teachers may also use the text as part of a classroom lesson plan.

Lesson Excerpt

Geometry is the study of the parts, including points, angles, lines, shapes, and surfaces. Before they can be examined or measured, it is important to understand the parts of geometric objects.

There are many parts to these objects that you may already recognize. You may or may not know their names already. There are other parts you have seen just by looking at basic shapes. You may not even know these parts have names at all!

Geometric Shapes

Shapes are one of the basic parts of Geometry. Can you think of all the different shapes you can identify?

You may already know what a circle is. You may not know everything about what a circle can do. By understanding the parts of a circle, you can figure out the size, circumference, diameter, and radius of the circle. Other shapes have lengths, widths, heights, areas, and perimeters. Identifying specific parts can tell you a lot about a shape!

First, let us refresh our memory on the basic definition of each shape.

Triangles

A triangle is a three-sided figure with three corners.
