								PLANET MERCURY  LESSON  Directions:  Print the Planet Mercury    reading 
                                    comprehension passage and questions (see 
                                    below). Students should read the passage 
	silently, then answer the questions.  Teachers may also use the text as 
	part of a classroom lesson plan.  Lesson Excerpt  Mercury is the  closest planet to the sun.  It is about  36 million miles from the sun.  Mercury  is one of the five planets we can see with our eyes.  It is very hard to see because it orbits so  near the sun.  It orbits quickly, making  the trip in only 88 Earth-days.  A year  is the time it takes a planet to orbit the sun.   Therefore, a year on Mercury is 88 days long!  The Romans noticed what a speedy traveler  this little planet was.  They named it  for their messenger god with winged sandals.      The days on  Mercury are very long!  A “day” is the  time it takes for a planet to make one rotation on its axis.  Mercury rotates very slowly.  One day on Mercury is about 59  Earth-days!   Continued...    More  Science
