AND WHAT SHOULD IT DO?

LESSON 2: Why is Government Necessary?

Objectives:

This lesson continues to introduce elementary school children to the concepts of government and citizenship. It reviews concepts from the previous lesson "What is Government?" and previews concepts for the next lesson "Who Gives Government Authority?"

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students should review the terms from lesson one and be able to use them with fluency.

  • Students should be able to identify and explain that a government provides order, safety and protects rights and property.

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

 

 

 

 

 

WHY IS GOVERNMENT NECESSARY LESSON PLAN

Student Deliverables:

Teacher should have copies of the Lesson 2 story and handout (see below) to distribute to the class.

Sequence of Events:

  • Distribute handouts. Read through the handouts as a class. Elicit student participation.

  • Optional: Assign students to read particular parts, e.g. Mr. Green or "you".

  • Have students work individually on the worksheet. Remind them that it is important to answer in complete sentences, and to give examples to support their ideas.

  • Review answers as a class (key below).

  • Discuss student responses, answer questions and clarify misunderstandings. Questions 4 and 5 are particularly useful for class discussion. Students should be encouraged to share, compare and challenge one another's ideas.

Student Tasks:

  • To complete the worksheet portion of the handout using the story as reference.

  • To make possible predictions as to what/whom gives government authority.
