What are Parts of Speech?

  • The term “part of speech” does NOT describe what a word means, but rather how a word is used within the context of a sentence. The term “part of speech” refers to the way in which a word is used. 
  • There are 8 basic parts of speech, including:           
    Nouns                         Adjectives
    Pronouns                    Verbs
    Adverbs                      Prepositions
    Conjunctions             Interjections
  • In this lesson, you will learn about nouns and adjectives.

What is a Noun?

  • A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. In order to identify the nouns in a sentence, ask yourself Which words are persons, places, things or ideas?
