Many instruments belong to the woodwind family. Some of the most common are the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and saxophone. Sound is created in instruments in the woodwind family when the player blows against an edge through a mouthpiece or through a reed. Covering or releasing holes that are in the body of the instrument makes different sounds.
This is what a flute looks like. The flute is one of the oldest known musical instruments. Some of the first flutes were made from carved bone. They make a very happy sound. Flutes are used in many different kinds of music. You may have heard a flute in a marching band or in a symphony.
