Distributive Property with Variables on Both Sides of the Equation

Students will learn how to use the distributive property to simplify and solve equations with variables on both sides of the equation.

Objectives:

• Students will review the distributive property and solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation.

• Students will learn the steps to solving equations with parentheses on both sides of the equation.

• Students will learn the steps to solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation.

• Students will also learn how to combine the like terms when necessary.

• Students will learn how to solve these equations for the missing variable.

• Students will practice solving these equations.

Suggested Grades:

Sixth Grade - Seventh Grade - Eighth Grade - Ninth Grade - including special education students

Lesson Excerpt:

I. Introduction and Review

- "Today we are going to be combining a couple of things that we have already learned. We are going to be solving equations using the distributive property, but there will be variables on both sides of the equation this time."
- "Okay, before we go on, let's take a minute to review the distributive property."
- "Who can tell me some things about the distributive property?"
- Note: Use this time to assess student recall and understanding. Write the student answers on the board and then fill in any that they miss.
