Everyone Has Feelings and Needs

A health lesson on feelings and needs. Includes printable teaching reading comprehension lesson worksheets.

 

Objectives:

• Students will be able to identify emotions/feelings and needs as basic to human nature.

• Students will be able to distinguish between needs and wants.

• Students will be able to identify ways of coping with distressing feelings.

 

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

Lesson Procedure:

Print the reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).

Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions. Teachers may also use the text as part of a classroom lesson plan.

 

Lesson Excerpt:

Part of being human is that we all have feelings and needs. Feels - or emotions- depend on a lot of things. You may feel happy, sad, angry or content depending on what is happening around you. Feelings also depend on how you think about what is happening around you. For example, you might feel angry if someone calls you stupid. But if you think about it and realize that you are not stupid, you may be able to change your angry feeling into a calm feeling.
