Objectives:

• Students will learn the rules for multiplying positive and negative numbers.

• Students will practice multiplying two or more quantities together.

Lesson Procedure:

Print the classroom lesson plan and worksheet questions (see below).

 

Lesson Excerpt:

"We have already learned how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers. Today, we are going to learn how to multiply them."

"First, let's review a few things about multiplication. Write these notes in your notebook."

On Board: Multiplication is about working with groups of things. If we are multiplying 6 x 5, that means we are multiplying 6 groups of 5.

Go over this information, and write the ways to show multiplication on the board for students to copy in their notebooks. There are a few different ways to show multiplication. The one that we are most familiar with is the x, as in 6 x 5.

We can also use a dot to show multiplication (write an example on the board).

You may also see a number next to a set of parenthesis with a number inside the parenthesis. On Board: 7(7)
