Polynomials: Subtraction

Students will learn how to subtract polynomials.

 

Objectives:

• Students will review how to add polynomials.

• Students will learn how to subtract polynomials.

• Students will practice these skills in their independent work.

 

Suggested Grades:

Seventh Grade - Eighth Grade - Ninth Grade - Tenth Grade - including special education students

Lesson Procedure:

Print the classroom lesson plan and worksheet questions (see below).

 

Lesson Excerpt:

- "We are going to approach subtracting polynomials in the same way that we approached addition. Again, we are going to be looking for the like terms. You can only subtract the like terms, just as you can only add the like terms."

- "If the polynomials that you are going to be subtracting are written horizontally, then you will need to rewrite them so that they are written vertically. Once they are written vertically, you can go ahead and subtract the terms."
- "Let's start with an example."
