Objectives:

• Students will be able to describe typical weather and other features of winter.

• Students will be able to distinguish winter from other seasons.

 

Suggested Grades:

3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade

Lesson Procedure:

Print the reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).

Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions. Teachers may also use the text as part of a classroom lesson plan.

 

Lesson Excerpt:

When you think of winter, you probably think of cold, snow and ice. You may also think of winter holidays like Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. Winter is also the time of year when daylight ends earlier and each day is dark longer than it is light.

Winter is one of four seasons. It begins and ends at different times in different countries and cultures. In North America, winter begins when the winter solstice occurs. This happens when the sun is farthest from the equator. There is a solstice twice each year.
